Matilda Temperley- A View From The Hill

Documentary and fashion photographer Matilda Temperley has been working on a year-long project to discover and document Somerset today.

A View From The Hill is an exhibition of new images by the award-winning photographer capturing Somerset’s wonderful distinctiveness and some of the issues facing its communities today.

Matilda studied biology at Edinburgh University before completing an MSc in the control of infectious diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. After working in the field in East Africa Matilda returned to the UK where she pursued a new career in photography.

Matilda’s photography is diverse and includes fashion and documentary commissions. Her work regularly appears in internationally recognised newspapers and magazines.

Matilda is passionate about her documentary projects, many of which explore the experience of marginalised communities. She is probably best known locally for her work in response to the winter floods of 2013–14 which severely affected her family and the community where she grew up. Her sell-out book, Under the Surface: Somerset Floods, won the Royal Photographic Society’s Vic Odden Award.

Know Your Place @ Weston Museum
Oct 5 @ 11:00 – 13:00

Come and meet one of our volunteers and find out about the Know Your Place project.  Know Your Place is an online mapping resource that allows you to search through historic maps, images and information for the west of England.

http://www.kypwest.org.uk.

If you have an image of historic North Somerset that you would like to share, you can bring it to the museum to be scanned at our drop in sessions.  It will be added to the Know Your Place website. Or you can upload yourself by navigating to the community layer of the website.

Weston Museum, supported by Weston-super-Mare Town Council, is working in partnership with North Somerset Council to enhance Know Your Place North Somerset.

Pub Quiz @ Weston Museum

Try your luck at our pub quiz, with a difference!

For a start, it’s not in a pub! We hold the quiz in the courtyard of the museum and as far we know, we’re the only museum with a regular quiz night.

You don’t need to be a history buff! Our quiz covers everything from music, film, television and so much more.

The quiz includes a mystery object round, so whilst you’re getting the drinks in at our fully licensed bar, you can also have a guess at a selection of historical objects and replicas.

It’s only £5 per team (of up to five people) and the pub landlord has kindly donated a prize for the winning team.  The bar will be open from 6.30pm and the quiz begins at 7:30pm.

Autumn Trail @ Weston Museum
Oct 26 – Nov 3 all-day

Search the galleries of Weston Museum in its first ever “Leave It Where You Found It” Scavenger Hunt, finding autumnal themed items such as leaves, pine cones and berries.

Costs 50p per entry and includes entry to the Museum Autumn Competition.

The idea behind “Leave It Where You Found It” is to encourage people to leave behind the berries, seeds, pine cones and leaves you might find on a nature walk, to help animals preparing for hibernation. It is also tailored from the concept of leaving places “better than where you found them”.
