Clara’s Cafe

Weston Museum is home to Clara’s Cafe which offers fresh food and delicious drinks. With stunning views of the Museum courtyard, Clara’s Cafe is open to all guests and aims to be a space which is inclusive to all. Clara’s Café is a safe and welcoming place which is fully accessible and is part of the Breastfeeding Friendly Scheme.

The house that is a part of Weston Museum was named after Clara Payne. Clara lived here from 1901 with her husband, Robert Payne, and their four children. This house was typical in the Victorian seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare. At first, Clara and Robert rented, however by 1919 they had managed to save up enough to buy the house for £280. This works out (roughly) at £15,000 today. The house stayed in Clara’s family for decades and eventually the museum purchased the house from Clara’s grandson in 1985.

When the time came to decide upon what to name our café, it was agreed that the name most fitting would be Clara’s café. This was in celebration of the person whose home offers us such a wonderful insight into Victorian life in Weston-super-Mare.

At Claras’ Cafe, we love hosting different privately run groups here on a regular basis. If you would like to host anything from book reading groups to artistic workshops (or anything in-between) in our cafe space, please contact us on museum@wsm-tc.gov.uk
